We all know Lou Holtz was the last homerun hire, but why? It's easy to understand why the choices were slim and none -- bad pun -- when Weis got the nod. After 2 coaches and 8 years of mediocrity, the ND job had lost a lot of its luster, but how did it get to be that way? It's a pattern of settling.

CW knew exactly what he was going to do, since the day he became Notre Dame's head football coach.

1. CW left a highly successful NFL team (New England Patriots) to become the head coach of a moribund college football team. Why would he do that? Money!!!!

2. CW promised the world would, once again, be Notre Dame's oyster. He did over and over again, from day #1. Remember, 6-5, nor 6-6, is not good enough. The implication was that Notre Dame would win national championships....

Let's talk endgame. It is safe to assume that Charlie Weis has coached his last game. The administration has the ball now and a fumble would be disastrous.
